When Josias’ wife approached us to assist with the concept and menu for his 40th birthday party, we faced quite an interesting challenge. Josias is a typical rugged South-African farmer, but he also appreciates the finer things in life and wanted something “smart, yet a little different” for his celebration.
The rural venue of Matjiesdrif, near Caledon in the Overberg district, was the setting for the sophisticated cocktail party, complemented with bowel food. Stacked pallets served as coffee tables, while bales of hay topped with soft white cushions provided seating on the wide veranda.
We decided on navy-blue and white stripes for the colour scheme: masculine, yet elegant. The invitations, designed by us, introduced the blue-and-white theme. This was carried through to the tables set inside the barn-like structure where the event was held. The same stripe motif of the table cloths was repeated in the ribbons used in the decor. Instead of vases, we opted for rustic containers like enamel jugs, milk cans and buckets of tin, giving a nod to the birthday boy’s farm origins. Instead of girly flowers, we chose succulents, rocks, and indigenous proteas with their strong graphic shapes for the floral arrangements. Farm-style lanterns provided lighting.
