07 Feb Real-Wedding: Lizann & Darren – West Coast Beach Ceremony, Yzerfontein
Lizann and Darren were referred to me by the owner of a venue in the Overberg, which I have worked at before. Upon receiving Lizann’s enquiry email I knew right there that I had to do their wedding. You see, this couple chose the little town of Yzerfontein, along the Western Coast of South Africa, as location of their destination wedding. Yzerfontein, holds an incredible special place in my heart as this little coastal town is my home away from home. My family has been holidaying there since before I was born, so it is no surprise that this is the place where I go to recharge my batteries, to soak up the sun and to drink long G&T’s with the sun setting over the ocean.
It was therefore no shock to me that this South African/Essex (UK) couple chose the Standkombuis Restaurant to serve as backdrop for their beautiful relaxed beach wedding. Anyone that knows the West Coast will know that the harshness of the sun and the salty mist from the rough seas is hard on any infrastructure in the area. Therefore, the rustic elements surrounding the venue allowed us to create a relaxed but equally chic look that impressed Lizann’s international guests. What a location for guests to kick off their shoes and party till late into the night. Which is exactly what this crazy bunch of people did! Lizann and Darren really have some amazing friends…gosh they were fun!
Sadly this past winter we had a massive storm in the Cape which caused for exceptionally high tides and rough seas and as a result Standkombuis suffered enormous damage. In the months after the storm the coastline seemed to have shifted even more with the tide often reaching the edge of the “new” dune. Have a look at what this once stunning venue looks like today.
What the venue looks like today…
Strandkombuis Restaurant did reopen their doors this past December, but this time their tent is at the back of the dune allowing you a unique view of the beautiful salt pans. We paid them a visit shortly after reopening and I can promise you the service and food is as good as ever! Go pop in!
